Victoria Memorial, Kolkata

Image
Today I've visited Victoria Memorial at Kolkata. It is said that the Victoria Memorial, the most famous building in Kolkata, is the result of Lord Curzon’s brain, who was once the Viceroy of India under British rule. In the year 1901, when the then Empress of British India died, Lord Curzon decided to honour her with the construction of a grand memorial monument. The proposal was to build the memorial as a stately edifice and allow visitors to have a look at the past marvels. In 1906, the foundation stone of the Victoria Memorial was kept by the Prince of Wales, who afterwards became King George V on January 4th. Victoria Memorial was officially inaugurated in 1921 and thereafter opened for public visits. Later, after India became independent, there were multiple additions to the Victoria Mahal

However, it was remodeled in 2005 with government aid and renamed as “Pathing Matsang Rinchhen Tse Gonpa” since the monastery is  located on a small hillock of Matsang village within Pathing area. World Sparrow Day

World Sparrow Day World Sparrow Day. Every year March 20 is observed as World Sparrow Day to raise awareness about the bird. The need for marking this day was felt due to the tremendous decrease in its population. The house sparrow is on the verge of extinction. The initiative was started by Nature Forever Society (NFS) of India, founded by Mohammed Dilawar, an Indian conservationist.  He started his work helping the house sparrow in Nashik. He was also named one of the Heroes of the Environment for 2008 by Time magazine for his efforts.  The first World Sparrow Day was celebrated in 2010 in different parts of the world.  Increased use of pesticides, change in the pattern of buildings and gardens missing from the houses have become the main factors why the number of sparrows has declined sharply in the past few years. Also, the radiation from the mobile and the TV towers has also been a cause of death of sparrows. Birds navigate by sensing the earth's magnetic fields and ...

World Photography Day

#WorldPhotographyDay2020 World Photography Day is celebrated so that people around the world can communicate their feelings and express themselves through the art of photography. The whole idea behind the day is to hold discussions about photography and encourage those who want to pursue photography as a hobby or career. At the same time, on this day the pioneers who inspired others to take up this skill are remembered for their contribution. It is said that the origin of the day lies in the invention of the Daguerrotype, a photographic process which was developed by Frenchmen Lois Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce in 1837. According to reports, on January 9, 1839, the French Academy of Sciences made an announcement regarding the Daguerreotype. After 10 days, the French government got the patents and said that this invention was a gift to the world, without any copyright. Once again Very Happy World Photography Day
